Cleaning inside a fridge is a Hometress add-on that starts with your food. The food has to be somewhere while the shelves and drawers are cleaned, and the clock that matters for it is not the one on your booking. This guide lines up two clocks: how long food can be out of a fridge, according to the CDC, and how long you might wait for a cleaner, according to the arrival window you picked.
Everything below comes from our booking page and checklist, our Terms of Service, and three public pages (the CDC, Whirlpool and Samsung), all checked on October 31, 2026. The timing table is arithmetic from those pages. It is not a Hometress rule, and it is not food-safety advice of our own.
The short answer
- What the pages say: the Move-in/out checklist line reads "Clean Inside of Refrigerator (must be clear)." The booking add-on, Clean Inside Fridge, is $35 and adds 25 minutes. Its card reads "Top to bottom · shelves + drawers" and does not say who takes the food out.
- The food clock: the CDC says "Don't leave food out of the refrigerator for more than 2 hours."
- The window clock: you pick a 2-hour arrival window at booking, our Terms say "usually 2-3 hours," and wider windows run 5 hours (FlexSave) or all day (UltraFlex).
- The plan: do not empty the fridge when your window opens. Put perishables in a cooler with ice packs unless the full time out fits within the CDC's 2 hours. Count from emptying to restocking, including travel, the wait during the visit, glass warming and cleaning. If you will be out, decide before you leave and write it in the arrival notes.
- The glass: cold glass shelves and drawers should come to room temperature before they meet warm water. The CDC, Whirlpool and Samsung all say so.
What the booking pages say about the fridge
A Standard clean does not go inside the fridge. Its kitchen list has "Wipe Down Refrigerator Front," and Deep adds "Wipe Down Refrigerator And Cabinet Tops (up to 9ft)." The inside is a separate add-on, Clean Inside Fridge, at $35 for 25 minutes of added time as of October 31, 2026. The inside-fridge add-on page carries the current price and minutes.
The Move clean is different. Our Move description says it covers "Inside the oven, fridge, and cabinets, interior windows and doors, baseboards," and its checklist has two lines with the same two words: "Clean Inside of Refrigerator (must be clear)" and "Clean Inside Cabinets (must be clear)."
So who takes the food out? The Move line says "must be clear." The add-on card does not say. We would rather you ask than guess: if you add the fridge, write what you plan to do in the booking's "Anything your cleaner should know on arrival?" notes, and if your booking or your cleaner tells you something different, follow that.
The two clocks
The food clock. The CDC page we cite is a guide to cleaning a fridge after a food recall, so we use it for two lines only. It says to "Empty the rest of the items in your refrigerator and put them on a counter or table while you clean," and "Don't leave food out of the refrigerator for more than 2 hours." Whirlpool's owner help page says "Remove all food, placing perishables in a cooler with ice packs." Neither page gives a number of hours for a cooler, so we do not either.
The window clock. At booking you choose a 2-hour arrival window. Section 2.5 of our Terms describes an "estimated arrival window (usually 2-3 hours)." FlexSave is a 5-hour window and takes $10 off the booking. UltraFlex is all day and takes $15 off; its card says "We pick the time anywhere in the day." These adjustments are subject to the $125 visit minimum, which can absorb some or all of the saving. By default, the UltraFlex card shows 7:30am–8pm, and we pick the time within it; the live catalog sets the window shown at booking. This is an arrival window, not a promised finish time. Our arrival window guide has the full card and the late-cleaner terms.
Put them side by side and the problem shows. If you empty the fridge the moment your window opens, the waiting can use up the food clock before anyone arrives.
| Window you picked | Longest wait for the cleaner | Against the CDC's 2 hours | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard, 2-hour window | 2 hours; the Terms say "usually 2-3 hours," so allow 3 | Reached at 2 hours, passed at 3, before the fridge work starts | Use a cooler unless the full time from emptying to restocking fits within 2 hours |
| FlexSave, 5-hour window | 5 hours | Passed by 3 hours | Do not empty when the window opens; budget through restocking or use a cooler |
| UltraFlex, all day | Card default: 7:30am–8pm; the live catalog sets the window | Default window exceeds 2 hours, before cleaning | Use a cooler unless the full time from emptying to restocking fits within 2 hours |
The Priority card describes a locked-in slot and gives no window length, so it is not in the table. Two more things the table cannot show. Neither the add-on card nor the checklist says when in a visit the fridge is done, so plan as if it comes after the other work. And the glass step below adds waiting time that no source we read puts a number on.
Three ways to handle the food
- Be home and budget through restocking. The booking step says "Your cleaner texts when they're on their way so you know when to step out, leave the code, or open the door." Only use a counter or table if the full time from emptying to restocking fits within 2 hours, including travel, the wait during the visit, glass warming and cleaning. Otherwise use a cooler with ice packs. The text says "on their way," not "at your door," so some travel time falls between the text and the knock. We do not publish how much.
- Use a cooler with ice packs. This is Whirlpool's instruction for perishables. Set it up before the window if you will be out, and keep the stay in it short, because no page we read says how long a cooler holds.
- If neither fits your day, ask first. Put the question in the arrival notes when you book, with your plan for the food, and follow the answer you get.
Glass shelves and drawers: what the makers say
Three sources agree, in different words. The CDC: "Don't run cold glass shelves or drawers under hot water because the glass could crack." Samsung: "Never clean the glass shelf with warm or hot water, as this could cause the glass to shatter," and "Wait for the glass to reach room temperature and then clean it with lukewarm water." Whirlpool tells owners to "let them warm to room temperature before washing to avoid thermal stress," adds that glass shelves and bins are "dishwasher safe, but handwashing is recommended," but excludes "Refrigerator shelves with under-shelf LED lighting are NOT dishwasher safe." Check your model's manual. It also says "Avoid harsh chemicals and excess moisture around electronic components."
These are manufacturers' instructions to anyone cleaning their own fridge. They are not a Hometress method, and we have not published how our cleaners handle shelves. None of the three pages says how many minutes cold glass needs to warm up, so we do not either.
Two made-up mornings
Both mornings are invented to show the arithmetic, built only from the figures above. Neither is a customer.
Dana, 2-hour window, home all morning. Dana's window runs 9 to 11. To be ready, she empties the fridge at 9. If the cleaner arrives at 11, the food has been out for 2 hours before any cleaning starts, which is the CDC's limit. Waiting for the on-the-way text still leaves travel, the wait during the visit and cleaning before restocking. If that full time cannot fit within 2 hours, Dana uses a cooler with ice packs.
Sam, all-day window, out at work. Sam picked UltraFlex's $15 adjustment, subject to the visit minimum, and leaves a door code. The card defaults to 7:30am–8pm; the live catalog sets the window, and nobody is home to act on a text. Sam packs the perishables in a cooler with ice packs before leaving, as Whirlpool describes, and writes that plan in the arrival notes so the cleaner knows what to expect.
Where to go next
The general list of what to do before any visit is in our preparation checklist, and the rest of what a Standard or Deep clean covers is in the checklist guide. When you are ready, start a booking, pick the window that suits your day, and add Clean Inside Fridge; the booking page shows the live total.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to empty my fridge before the cleaner comes?
For a Move clean, the checklist line reads "Clean Inside of Refrigerator (must be clear)." For the Clean Inside Fridge add-on, the card does not say who takes the food out, so ask in the arrival notes and follow what your booking or your cleaner says.
Do I need to empty it for a Standard clean?
A Standard kitchen list wipes the fridge front, and our preparation checklist says you do not need to empty the fridge for an exterior wipe.
How long can food be out of the fridge while it is cleaned?
The CDC page we cite says "Don't leave food out of the refrigerator for more than 2 hours." That page is a recall-cleanup guide, so we quote it for that line only.
Does the same rule apply to the cabinets?
The Move checklist uses the same words for cabinets: "Clean Inside Cabinets (must be clear)." We have no source for pantry advice, so ask in the arrival notes.
Can the shelves go under hot water?
Not while cold, say the makers. The CDC, Whirlpool and Samsung all say cold glass should reach room temperature first.
